Training

Training

Learn to write about film, properly.

Small-cohort writing programmes for emerging critics, interviewers and long-form journalists.

Pictograph Training is our editorial education arm — a series of intensive, small-cohort programmes for writers who want to take film journalism seriously.

We run three programmes a year. They are taught by working Pictograph editors and contributors, who give honest, careful feedback on real work. We do not award certificates. We do publish the best graduates in the magazine.

Programmes

The Critic’s Workshop · 8 weeks

An eight-week intensive on writing the modern long-form film review — structure, voice, the discipline of judgement and the discipline of generosity. Eight participants. Weekly editor feedback. The strongest piece is published in the magazine.

The Interview Lab · 6 weeks

A six-week deep-dive into the craft of the long-form film interview — preparation, listening, structure, the art of the follow-up. Includes a live editorial commission for graduates.

The Reported Feature · 12 weeks

Our most ambitious programme. Twelve weeks. Six writers. One reported feature each, edited and shepherded from pitch to publication by a senior Pictograph editor.

Who it's for

How to apply

Applications open twice a year — in February and September. We ask for two writing samples (published or not) and a short statement of intent. Cohorts are small and competitive. Tuition fees are kept deliberately low; partial scholarships are available for writers from under-represented regions.
